“What am I going to do with you?”

Reading Time: 2 minutes

“What am I going to do with you?” I grew up hearing this question when I didn’t do something quite right or my behavior was a disappointment. And now I heard myself saying the very same thing to one of my grandchildren I was caring for. As quickly as I said it, the Holy Spirit said to me “You’re going to love them, that’s what.” So I quickly said out loud to my grandchild “I’m going to love you , that’s what!” as I hugged them.

The relief and smile on their face let me know my heavenly Father had worked in my heart to be able to show unconditional love to them. We are all so imperfect. We all have sinned. We all fall short but God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him will be saved. Where the world is in the previous sentence we could have a blank for your name. We can love because God loved us first.

Of course I love my grandchild very much and would never intentionally hurt their heart but as I repeated what was said to me as a child I had been reminded by God how it made me feel, insecure. It’s underlying tone promoted performance to be loved and accepted ( What will you do with me?). It was a wonderful revelation for me that when I was frustrated in a situation with someone I love I could remind them that no matter what, what I would do with them, was love them. God taught me that.
